Shelia M. Goss Interview

Shelia M. Goss is an author who has been in the industry for a relatively short amount of time but she has attracted a huge fan base. Both of her fiction novels-My Invisible Husband and Roses are Thorns Violets are True were critically acclaimed bestsellers. Her most recent novel, My Invisible Husband was an Essence Bestseller. In addition to being a novelist, Shelia is also the editor for the Women In Music section at Bellaonline.com.

When did you starting writing?
Shelia Goss-I have been writing forever it seems like. Since I was 9. One of my teachers encouraged me to write and I've been writing every since. As far as professionally, my dad died in 96, so in 97 I started to do it professionally. Another thing that sparked it is that Princess Di was in that car accident and you know how you think, "Oh I have all this time." I thought, you know what, all this is happening I might as well try to pursue my dreams now while I have time.

Roses are Thorns, Violets Are True that was your first book right?
Shelia Goss-Actually, that was the first book that was published. I had written several more prior to that but that was the first published.

Since your first book was a huge success was that like amazing to you?
Shelia Goss-Oh yes, it really was. I was happy about it but I was also surprised.

Now your second published book, My Invisible Husband is an Essence Best-Seller.
Shelia Goss-I almost fell out of my chair when I heard about that. I found out at 1 something in the morning. I wanted to celebrate but everyone was slept. I contacted one of my friends on the West Coast because of the time zone issue that's the only person I could talk to.

How many issues of the magazine did you buy?
Shelia Goss-Well it's not in the magazine, it's actually on their website. I sent it probably to all my friends, the link and everything.

What kind of feedback have you gotten from women in their 30's who have read the book?
Shelia Goss-They thought it was good, they said, "I can't believe she did that, that was crazy." Some women have said they lied about having boyfriends. They would send themselves flowers at work. They understand. It's not the fact that you are single or not married, but it's when people keep asking you that same question like when you go to a family reunion or something, it can be annoying.

Did you go to BEA this year?
Shelia Goss-No, I didn't make it.

Are you working on a book right now?
Shelia Goss-I'm working on My Three Beaus. It's about a young lady who is afraid of commitment but she is dating three guys at the same time. So what happens is within the same week they all propose to her so she has a dilemma. She likes them all, she is just afraid of commitment. She doesn't want to commit to just one guy . So the dilemma comes in when she finds out about the others.

What do you enjoy most about being an author?
Shelia Goss-Well I never thought about it. I just write because I love to write. Whether any body reads it or not, I write.

Me too.
Shelia Goss-But I guess just being able to share what I write with other people and have those same people love what I am writing.

You also write for the Women in Music section at Bellaonline.com. How has that experience been for you?

Shelia Goss-Wow. It's been interesting. When I first started I planned to do it for a couple of months, but I found myself enjoying it because I love music as well. My love for music and being the editor for that site I get to talk to different artists and you get to realize that these people are human just like you.

And you interviewed Lisa Marie Presley..
Shelia Goss-Oh man, to date that is my most famous person I interviewed. She was a real down to earth person and she is a writer too. She writes poetry and I guess as a writer you have that kindred spirit.

What are your long term goals as a writer?
Shelia Goss-I want to keep putting out books. I try to have a different twist to every story that I write. I also write scripts. I would like to sell some of my scripts and hopefully I will see one of them on screen. I want to continue to interview artists. I like my freelance work.

I know you said you are working on My Three Beaus. Do you think we will see it this year or early next year?
Shelia Goss-
It depends. I have an agent now and it really depends. I have been self published for the last few years. Do what I have to do and then get it out. I am going to discuss this with my agent. It depends. I have readers who are ready who have contacted me one on one. It will be ready probably by the end of next month but I don't know if it will be out this year.
