Avant Interview

Avant scored a huge hit with the single "Read Your Mind" from his 2003 album "Private Room." Avant is now ready to follow up that album with Director which is due at the top of next year. This was my second time interviewing Avant, it's always cool to talk to him because he is a pretty chilled out and laid back person to talk to.

What have you been doing since the promotion for Private Room ended?
Avant-I've been working. After the tour I went right in the studio and started working.

What exactly do you want fans to know about you?
Avant-I want them to know that I love them. I have a general love for them really.

Last time we spoke you were representing Chicago in a sense are you still holding down Chi Town?
Avant-Well ya know I have love for the Chi. Chicago gave me my first opportunity at a shot on the radio. I'm from Cleveland and I'm always representing Cleveland. As a matter of fact I'm in Cleveland right now with my fam but I do have love for the Chi.

The last time we spoke you mentioned your small role in the movie Barbershop 2. Have you done any acting since?
Avant-No I haven't. I haven't had a chance to focus on the acting thing because I have been working on the new album. I was dealing with other producers on this album. On the first three albums I dealt with one producer. This time I ventured off and dealt with J.D., Michael Cox, the Underdogz, a lot of different vibes this time. I wanted to mix the album up and I'm still doing the album.

Is it going to sound like a different Avant album?
Avant-Musically yeah, but those catchy metaphors and the way I swing my words are going to be the same. Trust me I'm not going to let you all down.

You seem to be pretty low key in between albums is it because you are in the studio or because...
Avant-Basically I try to catch other artists, discover the KeKe's of the world. I try to give them Avant. I don't like to spend a lot of time on myself when I can help others grow as well. I have a song on her new album and I'm looking for other new talent as well. I don't like to be stagnant but at the same time I like to help put other cats out.

For the people who might be looking to work with you, do you have a record label?
Avant-That is what I am working on right now with the company. I'm trying to get this label deal happening. I just did a song with the Pussycats Dolls with a young girl, I'm trying to show what I can do. I want people to respect not only what I do as an artists but as a producer.

I saw your name in the liner notes of Britney Spears In The Zone album.
Avant-People have told me that. I didn't do it but it would have been a great plug

How did you end up hooking up with Lil Wayne for the first single?
Avant-Me and my man Jermaine Dupri were in the studio. He came up with the beat. He told me to sit with it for a few minutes. We revisited the song in about 2 days and I was like, "We need a hot rapper on here." He was like, "My man Wayne is berserk right now," he called him up and made it happen, he made it happen.

I remember last year you toured with Jagged Edge, Ginuwine and Joe. Will you be participating in another group tour this time around?
Avant-I'm trying to set up this new album so that I can go out by myself. I want to headline this time and do what I need to do. No disrespect to those guys we had fun and did what we needed to do. I'm trying to build a touring base and set it up so I can headline myself.

I didn't ask you much about the album is there anything you want to tell me about the album?

Avant-You will truly enjoy it. There are a lot of different vibes on the album. I have a song named "Imagination" where the young lady is sleep and I'm trying my best to keep her sleep so I can finish off her sexual fantasy before she wakes up to go to work. Nothing thats new under the sun but there are a lot of different ways to approach thing.

When will the album be out?
Avant-First of the year. I want to have two good looks.
